Southdown
Coastliner - 25th Anniversary
In 1975 Southdown started the
700 Coastliner service to connect Brighton and Portsmouth, serving
Chichester and Bognor Regis. Twenty five years later, the
service remains virtually unchanged, terminating at Southsea instead of
Portsmouth. Below are some photographs recording the last 25
years. |

Southdown Park Royal/Atlantean
730 (SCD730N) at Bognor Regis bus station in July
1975. The vehicle is lettered in livery to promote the service
which had just started. |
Brighton & Hove used to
jointly operate the service. Their 716 (F716 LFG),
an East Lancs/Scania, is seen at Chichester bus station in October 1991. |
The last vehicles to be
delivered to Southdown before being Stagecoached were Northern
Counties/Volvos. 306 (F306MYJ) from this batch
is seen at Chichester in October 1991. |

A rather ordinary Southdown
ECW/VR (687 EAP987V) is seen at a damp Brighton bus station in
August 1986. |
Stagecoach has
employed standard Alexander/Olympians on the route during the
1990s. Once such vehicle, S312CCD, is seen at
Worthing Pavillion Theatre in June 2000. Note it carries the
new Coastliner logos on the front. |
