After
170 years of operation, Travelling Post Offices - trains that had a sorting
office on board - finally stopped operating at the end of
January. There were 49 mail trains run by EWS, who had
recently invested in new locomotives for the services (above).
Now the post is off the rails, it is traversing the UK by road, which
means there are an extra 10 million items a day in red vans.
There was rather a low key send-off in Reading on the last Friday night -
one man and a video camera to record the final mail train (right). |
