DFDS Dover to Calais
Although DFDS are principally a Northern European operator they have a presence in the UK covering the former Transmanche Ferries route from Newhaven to Dieppe and the Dover to Dunkirk service formerly operated by Norfolkline. As of 2016 they also now operate on the Dover to Calais service having previously run this route jointly with LD Lines. They use three vessels, two ferries previously with SeaFrance/MyFerryLink (see right) and the well travelled former Prins Filip built for RMT for the Dover to Ostend service. The interiors could be described as "Scandinavian Spartan" and include large soul-less eating areas, acres of starkly painted white walls and only a handful of comfy chairs. The restaurant rivals P&O for being so basic, the only saving grace being a fine selection of unhealthy puddings. What a contrast to these ships previous lives, especially those that operated with SeaFrance.

SeaFrance History SeaFrance started operation in 1996 assuming the fleet of SNCF. Their fleet was ancient and it was upgraded by the delivery of sisters SeaFrance Rodin in 2001 and SeaFrance Berlioz in 2005. They brought a new level of sophistication to the route not seen since. In early 202 the company was forced into liquidation and their vessels laid in Dunkirk for over six months until they returned to service for MyFerryLink, owned by Eurotunnel. In 2015 Eurotunnel sold the operation to DFDS who after a turbulent six months finally placed the former SeaFrance vessels in service. |
